Senate Condemns Anti-Muslim Rhetoric
Washington, DC - The Islamic Institute announces today
the passage by unanimous consent of Senate Resolution 133, supporting greater
religious tolerance towards Muslims. S.R. 133 was introduced July 1st, 2000,
by Senator Spencer Abraham (R-MI) and co-sponsored by Senators Craig (R-ID),
Robb (D-VA), Wellstone (D-MN), Lieberman (D-CT), Johnson (D-SD), and Senator
Feingold (D-WI). Today the Senate unanimously voted to condemn intolerance
and discrimination towards American Muslims "as wholly inconsistent with
the American values of religious tolerance and pluralism." The bill recognizes
the contributions of the 6 million American Muslims, adherents to the fastest
growing religion in America. Furthermore, the Senate calls on all Americans
who advocate the ideals "of the founders of our nation" to fight
against all forms of bias, bigotry, and intolerance everywhere.
S. R. 133 recognizes the various forms and ways in which
Muslims have been subjected to discrimination including hate-inspired violence,
especially during the aftermath of the Okalahoma City bombing. The bill also
denounces the ubiquitous anti-Muslim rhetoric generally found in films and
media, as well as the stereotypes that have been leveled against Muslims regarding
terrorism in the US and religious persecution abroad.
