As you may know, an earthquake rocked northern Morocco on Tuesday, February 24, 2004 . It struck at 2:27 am , and measured a 6.5 on the Richter scale (the aftershock measured a 4.1). The earthquake could be felt as far away as southern Spain . The quake struck rural communities near the city of Al Hoceima , a major European ‘hidden' destination spot. The area is home to 300,000 to 400,000 people. Five hundred and sixty-five people were killed as they slept in their mud and stone homes. The region is poor and underdeveloped due largely to government neglect after a Berber uprising in 1958. The poverty level forces most working-age men to European countries to look for work. The dead were mostly women, children, and the elderly, as there are few men around. Thousands of survivors have halted traffic on roads, protesting the conditions under which they have had to live under since loosing their homes. They claim that they are not receiving aid the government promised them. Ahmed Mnabhi, 26, stated: "We spent the night under the rain, in the cold. We want this to stop . We want building material, bricks, cement, iron to rebuild our homes." A number of countries have pledged support to the survivors, including Algeria , Belgium , China , France , Germany , Italy , Luxembourg , Portugal , Spain , Saudi Arabia , and the United States . Additionally, humanitarian organizations such as the Red Cross/Red Crescent have started administering aid. The Islamic Free Market Institute is collecting donations to aid the Moroccan
survivors. If you would like to donate money, please send a check or money
