ELECTION ALERT 2000November 6, 2000The American Muslim community has an historic opportunity to have a major impact on the presidential election this year between Republican candidate George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore. The Muslim community in the U.S. is working hard in several key states where the election is locked in a dead heat, and the Muslim vote in these states will help decide the next President of the United States. Special effort is being taken in several of these states to mobilize Muslims for this years’ vote: Ohio – An endorsement message from over 30 Muslim leaders in the state of Ohio for Republican Presidential Candidate George W. Bush has been mailed to over 4,000 Muslim households, community centers, mosques, and ethnic stores and businesses. Illinois – An endorsement message from 47 Illinois Muslim leaders for George W. Bush has been distributed to several thousand Muslim households, community centers, mosques, and ethnic stores and businesses in the state through the efforts of Talat M. Othman. Florida – Efforts have been made in Florida to get out the Muslim vote on November 7. Muslim volunteers in Tampa, Orlando, and other parts of Florida are posting signs and distributing campaign literature in Muslim communities. Michigan – Volunteers have distributed over 60,000 rosters of endorsement for the Bush/Cheney campaign and for Senator Spencer Abraham in Muslim and Arab neighborhoods in Dearborn and the surrounding areas. Muslim leaders have also held community meetings to get out the vote. Abraham Turaani and Dr. Yhahia Basha have led the efforts in Michigan. Pennsylvania – Muslim leaders and volunteers are delivering speeches in mosques and community centers, and are also distributing flyers of the American Muslim Political Coordinating Council – PAC’s endorsement of George W. Bush. * Be sure to remind Muslim friends and family to get out the vote tomorrow and make your voice heard! |
